What are your comments on the current provincial tobacco control strategy Building a Healthier Saskatchewan and what is the position of the PC Party of Saskatchewan with respect to its funding?

As a cancer survivor, Leader of the PC Party of Saskatchewan, Rick Swenson knows all too well the importance of prevention, early detection and provincewide education on the dangers of tobacco use. With the dollar amount that Saskatchewan collects from tobacco taxes, the PC Party of Saskatchewan would support a greater portion of that tax revenue to being dedicated to a public awareness program on tobacco use.

What is the position of the PC Party of Saskatchewan with respect to phasing out the sale and use of cosmetic pesticides in the province?

The PC Party of Saskatchewan believes there would have to be a province-wide discussion with all stakeholders. Saskatchewan has 44% of all the farmland in Canada. We would not want to see regulations which could impact on the farming community and its business relationships including the chemical industry. There would have to be a protocol developed which would not allow any ban in the urban landscape which would then apply to the farm sector. We would certainly be open to a well-rounded discussion in this area.

What is the position of the PC Party of Saskatchewan with respect to restricting youth under the age of 18 from using indoor tanning equipment?

The PC Party of Saskatchewan believes that all people, including youth under the age of 18, should be made aware of the potential harm while using indoor tanning equipment. We allow people over the age of 16 to make decisions regarding their sexual health without parental consent – perhaps it would be more appropriate if we use the same age requirement when making restrictions and the need for parental consent regarding use of indoor tanning equipment. Certainly all parents should be concerned if their children are using these services and if it is really necessary for them to do so.
